Trouble in Tahiti examines a modern day couple through the lens of 1950’s idealism. Sam and Dinah are a 2022 married couple feeling their spark fading out. However, they are pressured to stay together to keep up appearances. A trio of singers, dressed in 1950’s attire, sing on and on about how “perfect” life is. This gravely contrasts with the couple’s reality. Dinah is a mommy-blogger and Sam works a high power job that keeps him away from home. While Sam is deeply rooted in the present, Dinah is a dreamer often fantasizing about what her life could have been.
While attending a movie, she falls asleep and dreams up her perfect nightmare: Gallantry. In her nightmare, she is trapped on the set of a 1950’s hospital soap opera and all of her worst fears are realized. Her husband is in love with his assistant and the assistant might love him back. Worst of all, there’s nothing she can do about it, because she’s stuck as a commercial announcer. Her only savior is the human embodiment of the product she is selling, “Billy Boy Wax,” who charms her and makes her feel seen. She eventually awakes in the movie theater, startled back into the reality of her loveless marriage. Audiences are left wondering how her story ends.
