Based on the 1984 award-winning movie of the same name starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose is a classic tale of teenage rebellion and repression that features high energy choreography and touching vocal performances. When teenager Ren McCormack and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small southwestern town, he’s in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can’t quite believe he’s living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal.

Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is right around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a discussion to abolish the dance ban and revitalize the spirit of the townspeople. This is a fast-paced drama filled with such now-famous hit songs as the title track and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and “Holding Out For A Hero”. This show explores several themes that are good points of discussion to have with teens, including defending strongly held values, the importance of family and community, the importance of communication between teens and parents, and respect of self-expression.

Overall the show’s messages are positive–that teenagers have a voice and deserve to be heard, communication with your children is essential, parents and community matter as role models and that together they can make a difference.
